Culture

Cork has always brimmed with culture and after its status as European Capital of Culture in 2005 the city has been overflowing in cultural capital. From traditional Irish music and dance to art, theatre, festivals and sport there has never been a better time to visit Leeside.

Gaelic Games

Gaelic games make up a huge part of Cork culture. As the most successful of the 32 counties, Cork has a rich legacy of sporting passion and excellence. While both games are played all over the city and county at all age levels, hurling is particularly strong in east Cork and the city while Gaelic football is more dominant in west Cork.

The game is far from exclusive to men: ladies football and camogie (pictured below) which is almost identical to hurling, is played all around Cork city and county.

Traditional Music

Traditional Irish music and dance is thriving in Cork with thousands of musicians and dancers aroud Cork city and county contributing to a scene bursting with energy.

Cork city is a particular hot bed with lots of bars hosting traditional Irish sessions across the week. Cork City Council has also set up The Lee Sessions, a network of high quality traditional Irish music sessions in pubs around the city ensuring there's a range of gigs to choose from seven nights a week.

During the summer months the super popular Pulses of Tradition takes place at the Triskel Christchurch venue.
